What Jaye Eats
You guys keep me going! ~Jaye F.
Veering from our regularly scheduled program (again).
I had the pleasure of chatting with Jaye on Wednesday during the 8:00 a.m. class. If you don’t know Jaye, she’s 95 years old and lives independently. Her family is pretty adamant about her continuing to work out with us even when she doesn’t want to. She’s trained with us for EIGHT YEARS! Her parting line every day: “You guys keep me going!”
Jaye has a few limitations – but very few. She’s legally blind so her friends drive her to class. And he has a little trouble hearing, but otherwise, she moves better than some of our younger athletes. She can squat below parallel, has full shoulder range, and deadlifts like a boss. She has a pretty good clean and CAN do a burpee on the deck if we make her, but she prefers a bar.
Jaye is only 93 in the picture above with Coach Falon!
I sat with Jaye after her class this past Wednesday and was telling her about the Health Challenge we’re in the second week of. She asked what we were doing so I explained it to her. She said: “Oh honey, I eat like a horse!”. So I asked: “Will you share with me what you eat?”. And here we go. Here’s what a 99-pound, 4 foot 10 inch 95 year old eats:
BREAKFAST
Smoothie (blended) with:
1 Banana
Guacamole
Cottage Cheese
Protein Powder (from the “Health Food Store” – not plant-based)
Low Fat Yogurt
LUNCH
1 or 2 eggs
Publix Avocado Bread/Toast
Decaf Coffee
Water from the faucet with ice
SNACK
Aldi’s Round Coconut Cookies – 1, sometimes just a 1/2 of a cookie
DINNER
Big Salad with Spring Mix
Either a Frozen Chicken Pot Pie or Frozen Meatloaf
Piece of Dark Chocolate
I’m sure you’re wondering…what’s your point, Sam?
Well, SHE EATS.
When we reviewed the logs before we started our 21-Day Health Challenge just 9 days ago…we didn’t expect to see so many who didn’t eat “much”. Our bodies need nutrients – whole foods to provide vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, and carbohydrate. You need to chew – masticate. There is an enormous cascade of processes that are unleashed when you “eat”. Humans were meant to eat. We were shocked at the amount of supplementation that was taking place of real food. Are we so afraid of our food system that supplements are now a “substitute” for food? This is NOT GOOD. Trust me, you will gain more benefit from eating from our, admittedly, broken food system than supplementing your macros and micros.
I was refreshed to sit and jot down all that Jaye eats in a day. And wouldn’t know you it, when I sat down she was bragging – reporting – that she’d just had her annual physical and her bloodwork is PERFECT! She’s on only one medication for Osteoporosis. No blood pressure, blood sugar, or cholesterol meds. She’s actually a picture of health.
My point?
